Teaching black history through art
Our Story
Canvas & Courage is a nonprofit that combines art, history, and education to honor the lives of Black women often overlooked in the classroom.
Founded by artist and author Carol Jacobsen, the organization provides schools and libraries with access to beautifully illustrated books that feature her original portraits and engaging biographies. Each page is designed to educate, inspire, and reflect the powerful legacies of Black women throughout American history.
Through grant-funded programs, Canvas & Courage equips educators with inclusive resources that bring true Black history to life. Whether it’s a coloring book project, a classroom exhibit, or a teacher-led discussion using our materials, we believe every child deserves to see themselves in the stories they’re taught.

Carol Jacobsen, President
Worked for 34 years as a programmer and Tech Consultant in the Bay Area, California. Nonprofit founder, artist, author, and speaker.
Shirley Hasley, Secretary
Retired school teacher. In 1965, Shirley was the first Black teacher in the Mill Valley School District in California and taught there for 38 years.
Sandy Jacobsen, Treasurer
A leader for 23 years in commercial and community banking; transitioned to 17 years as a national nonprofit consultant. Volunteering and living in St. Paul, MN.
